چکیده

80% of the patients with esophageal cancer. Nutritional support may prevent or reverse malnutrition, and is associated with better response to cancer therapy. Serum proteins provide indirect information about visceral proteins levels. Their reduction indicates less hepatic synthesis, which is usually assigned to intake deficits. In malnourished patients with nutritional support, an increase in protein concentration will serve to document an anabolic response. As serum transferrin has a half-life of 8 days, and serum prealbumin, of 2 to 3 days, these proteins are affected earlier by acute

Early Post Operative Enteral Versus Parenteral Feeding after Esophageal Cancer Surgery

Introduction: The incidence of malnutrition in hospitalized patients is reported to be high. In particular, patients with esophageal cancer are prone to malnutrition, due to preoperative digestive system dysfunctions and short-term non-oral feeding postoperatively. Selection of an appropriate method for feeding in the postoperative period is important in these patients.   Materials and Methods:...

The Serum C-reactive Protein and Prooxidant-antioxidant Balance in Patients with Esophageal Cancer Compared to Healthy Subjects

Introduction: The molecular mechanisms involved in pathogenesis of esophageal cancer have been the main concern of several studies. In this study, we aimed to investigate the changes of serum prooxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB) value as a redox index, as well as serum C-reactive protein (CRP) compared to healthy control group. Materials and Methods: In a cross-sectional study, blood samples we...

Uremic malnutrition is a predictor of death independent of inflammatory status.

BACKGROUND Several studies have pointed out the influence of nutritional parameters and/or indices of inflammation on morbidity and mortality. Often, these conditions coexist, and the relative importance of poor nutritional status and chronic inflammation in terms of predicting clinical outcomes in chronic hemodialysis (CHD) patients has not been clarified. METHODS We undertook a prospective ...

The effect of iron-deficiency anaemia on two indices of nutritional status, prealbumin and transferrin.

1. Serum prealbumin, transferrin and iron concentrations were measured in ninety-two north Cameroonian children under 5 years of age. The results were grouped according to the blood haemoglobin concentration range in order to show the interactions of anaemia with prealbumin and transferrin concentrations. 2. Transferrin concentration showed a significant negative correlation with serum Fe and p...

The Effect of Malnutrition on Protein Glycosylation in Children

OBJECTIVE The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of protein energy malnutrition on protein glycosylation by investigating transferrin isoform pattern and its relationship to the degree of malnutrition and the biochemical markers of nutritional status in children. METHODS Forty one children with mild (n=23) and severely/moderately (n=18) acute malnutrition and 29 controls were enrol...
